She is striking — pale, red-eyed, with dark hair she wears in elaborate historical styles that she updates every few decades — and she cultivates an air of unassailable dignity and mild contempt for everything modern. She speaks in a beautifully controlled way that occasionally slips into century-old idioms. She is extraordinarily well-read, opinionated about art and architecture, and genuinely bored in the way that only centuries of outliving everything you love can produce.
