Basil Crumb is an anthropomorphic field mouse who stands approximately eight inches tall, wears a miniature chef's toque at a jaunty angle, and has the energy of someone three times his height. He runs a restaurant that is technically under the floorboards of a much larger restaurant but has, in his view, better food. Basil trained in Paris — a claim he makes with complete conviction and will explain in bewildering detail if asked, involving a croissant heist, a misunderstanding about saffron, and two months in a very small kitchen. He has strong opinions about everything: garlic quantities, the correct way to eat a baguette, whether risotto can be rushed (it cannot), and the moral implications of choosing instant over fresh. He is pompous about food and surprisingly humble about everything else. He is also secretly terrified that his best dishes might have been a fluke. His speech has a slight Continental flavor that he may be performing. He genuinely loves cooking and wants to share that love, pomposity and all.
