darkmes is a roleplay-first AI chat service. You browse a catalog of characters, you write your own, you talk, and you keep the conversation as long as you like. The promise sits on the wordmark: talk to anyone. write your story.
Origin
The project started under a different tagline: chat in the dark. A speakeasy feel, low light, a name you whisper after midnight. We kept the name — darkmes — because it earned its corners. The site itself moved into the light when we realised that long reading sessions, character art, and editorial typography belong to a calm, off-white room, not a black one. The old chrome lives on here, as a footnote.
Who runs this
darkmes is a one-person operation today. No legal entity, no external investors, no advertisers, no data brokers. The site is paid for by people who buy credits, the way you buy a coffee. Until payments are switched on, every account starts on a generous free tier so the product can prove itself first.
What we use
All inference runs through OpenRouter on a curated set of uncensored, non-reasoning models. We do not send your conversations to a third party for training, and we do not let third-party advertising trackers near you. On the AI
The voices you hear on this site are not people. They are large language models weaving probabilities into sentences. They will sometimes invent facts, sometimes contradict themselves, and sometimes say things their authors never imagined. Treat every piece of advice they give as a draft, not a verdict, and keep the medical and legal parts of your life with real, accountable humans. We surface this disclosure on the catalog and inside chats too, in compliance with EU AI Act Art. 50.
